Editors are swamped by eager content providers, most of whom can produce interesting, useful and well researched blog posts.

Create a genuine, news story for your industry. Back up your story with new data and analysis. Create charts, graphs and infographics. Gather comments and opinions from industry leaders. Then write the story up and post on your own blog. Be thorough and self critical.

Once posted, pitch the news story to industry news outlets using your blog post as the reference and the source for them to link to.

If your story is genuinely important and newsworthy, journalists will write up their own story and link to your blog post for in depth analysis.

My best link-building tip for 2022 is to join relevant networks. I’m a member of some groups on Facebook and LinkedIn and I must say they totally worth time spent there. Every day new members come and join the groups and it’s a fantastic way to build your own network. There’s lots of mistakes new B2B sites make when trying to build links. Here’s the top three things not to do:

Don’t build links for the sake of building links – don’t be tricked by a site’s high domain rating. SEO takes time. So, avoid just swapping links with sites that aren’t actively working to increase their online visibility. Instead, build links with sites that are on an upwards trajectory and invested in future growth.

Don’t write awful guest posts. Sure, sneaking a crappy guest post past an editor is a quick way to get some links to your pages. But as a rule you should never write anything that you wouldn’t be happy to show your customers. It’s better to write fewer top quality guest posts that build your brand for the long-run than lots of short low-quality ones.

Don’t assume your newly acquired links are for certain. Sometimes sites have a tendency to switch your links to no-follow (or even delete them entirely). Use a tool like Ahrefs to keep tabs on your acquired and lost links at least once per week.
